Neel Loves Curls & The Curly Girl Method.

If you are one of the lucky people to be blessed with curly hair, you will understand the pain of a terrible poodle hair cut, hair frizzing at any hint of moisture or owning more styling products than an average hairdresser. But these painful days are over. I would like to formally introduce you to your two new best friends, Neel Loves Curls and Lorraine Massey.

Neel Loves Curls is Melbourne’s first curly hair salon, specialising in curly hair and curly hair ONLY. Neel is absolutely mad about curls and you definitely feel like you are in very safe hands. He is the most bubbly, vibrant and charming hair dresser I have met. He will help turn your curls from drab to fab, passing on all the knowledge he has of styling and maintaining beautiful curls. Prices for a hair cut and treatment may be more than what you are used to paying, but I would pay the price 100 times over if it meant I had a beautiful cut. Upon your first visit to the salon, Neel will ask if you have read The Curly Girl Handbook and this is where your second best friend comes into play.

Written by Lorraine Massey, "The Curly Girl Handbook" is the Holy Grail (cue Jay-Z rapping) for us curly haired beauties. Her aim is to change and educate the way curly hair should be treated and cut; and this is where the Curly Girl Method began. Without revealing too much, a simple Google/Pinterest search of “The Curly Girl Method” will show you the basics of getting the perfect curls. These include:

-        No sulfates – Sulfate is a harsh chemical found in shampoo which is also found in dish washing detergent. A big no no for curls as it strips all the natural oils
-        No silicones – Silicone, found in a lot of conditioners, gels and styling products, prevents moisture from penetrating the hair strands
-        Moisturise, moisturise , moisturise! – curly hair needs all the moisture it can get and the best time to apply product is when the hair is dripping wet

The beauty of this book is that it covers all curls, from the softest of waves to the biggest of afros, and everything in between. The fun part is working out which tips and recipes best work for you. From experience, it takes about 3 weeks for your hair to show any noticeable changes and after that you will be a changed person!

Neel Loves Curls is located above Quick Brown Fox at 357 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (hint: you go through the store and up the stairs to the beautiful red door). And you must be quick, Neel books out (here) faster than you can say Neel loves Curls; he is booked out until June already! However, The Curly Girl Handbook can be purchased online on most websites, which means you can start your new curly lifestyle much sooner.

So I suggest investing in your curls, treat them right and you will be rewarded with beautiful curly hair.
